Crowns / Ceramic Reconstruction

Crowns are synthetic caps, usually made of a material like porcelain, bonded on to your tooth to reconstruct or reinforce it.

Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth’s function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.  Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures
A tooth may need to be prepared to accommodate a crown. A model is taken of the existing tooth with a silicone impression or more accurate digital impression captured.  A custom-designed crown is manufactured either in a porcelain oven or milled from a high strength solid ceramic block. In some cases, a temporary crown is applied until the permanent crown is ready. Permanent crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are typically applied only to relatively small areas.

Caring For Your Crowns
With proper care, a good quality crown could last up to eight years or longer. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.

Certain behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Moreover, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or even damage the crown

What is CEREC?
Cerec is a ceramic reconstruction for Partial and Full Crowns
milled from a high strength sintered Ceramic block:

CEREC means we can quickly and economically restore damaged teeth using a durable ceramic material that matches the natural colour of other teeth in your mouth.

What advantages does CEREC offer?
First and foremost, the restoration can be performed in a single session, usually in about one hour. With CEREC there’s no need to make an impression and to send it to a lab. We won’t inconvenience you by asking you to return for a second visit.

Secondly, the restoration is natural looking, because it is made of tooth-coloured ceramic material. It’s metal-free; no silver fillings to discolour your smile! The ceramic material is compatible with tissue in your mouth and is high-grade, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. It allows us to be extremely precise and save more of the healthy part of your tooth.

How Does CEREC Work?
First, we prepare the damaged tooth by applying a thin layer of reflective powder directly on the tooth’s surface. Using a special camera, we then take a picture of the tooth. We work from this photo, which is actually a pin-sharp optical impression of the tooth. These digital impressions give a much more accurate shape of the tooth to restore than the distortion of rubber impressions. therefore the adjusting before fitting is no longer needed.

Then CEREC creates an extremely precise restoration. A high-speed diamond bur and a disk work simultaneously to mill the restoration out of a solid block of ceramic material. Finally, we bond the newly milled restoration to the tooth using state-of-the-art adhesive dentistry.

Over a decade of clinical research and experience supports the CEREC technology. User input and research have helped the manufacturer improve the product during this time. Dentists have performed over four million restorations worldwide.

CEREC has revolutionized the way our practice can deliver treatment to patients like you. This high-tech equipment allows us to restore damaged teeth in a single visit. The result is a beautiful, natural-coloured restoration that is much stronger than before.

Can’t recommend Dr Ellie and her friendly team enough. I usually get very anxious at dental appointments but Dr Ellie and her team made it very smooth and easy for me. She talked me through the procedure and explained every option in details. She was thorough and gentle.

I went to see my regular dentist and was referred to a specialist surgeon for removing my wisdom teeth. I was told I needed to be asleep for the procedure at a private hospital but I couldn’t afford that. My friend recommended to try Surry Hills Dental as they have a good reputation for removing wisdom teeth. I was made an appointment to see Dr. Ash. I had a consultation with their team over the phone regarding the procedure and risks and on my first visit to their lovely cozy practice I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed! I got this done in the chair with the happy gas in less than an hour for about a quarter of the price I was quoted by the specialist and hospital… I’m so grateful I found this practice and will be seeing Dr. Ash for further check ups and treatment

My experience couldn’t have been better! Dr.Wu removed all 4 wisdom teeth (not easy cases either) and made it such a relaxing, safe and quick procedure. I was quite nervous going into the appointment but immediately started to feel calm and relaxed - thank you to the friendly, personable and accommodating staff. It was an excellent environment and I weirdly I had the best time from start to finish. What was even better was my recovery. I experienced only one day of soreness and after that I healed in less than a week. I seriously couldn’t rate my experience higher.
